My Second Home

Hello my dearest lovelies! Thanks for stopping by the blog.

This year makes it two years since I migrated from the Caribbean island of  Trinidad to  the city of Minot, North Dakota in the United States of America.   In light thereof,  as I reflect upon and reminisce about how my life has developed and changed during those two years, what I can say with absolute certainty is that I have grown quite fond of this lovely, idyllic  town that I now call, my second home.

The charm and magnetism of Minot, lies with the genuine warmth and  gracious neighborly disposition of the people, a sense of peacefulness and belonging  associated with country living and the natural beauty of the landscape harmoniously co-existing with historical buildings and monuments. This enchanting town has therefore successfully incorporated the elements of a contemporary modern society without losing its traditional values and sense of community.

Minot or The Magic City as it is fondly referred to, got its famous moniker because of how quickly the town grew in a short space of time. Since the history of the town is strongly connected to the growth of the railroad construction of the 1800’s , I thought it would be fitting to commemorate my life in Minot by visiting the train station. On this trip, I wore a patterned sheath dress which I layered over a blouse that has a statement collar.  I felt that this pairing gave the outfit a rather  Parisian chic appearance.  Another bonus feature of this dress is that it is  fully lined which makes it a great versatile  article of clothing for all the seasons. For instance,  in my case I used the dress as a transitional layering piece for the fall/ winter months.

For that extra layer of warmth and to protect my self against the wind chill,  I wore an ultra chic moto jacket that has faux fur trimmings on the collar. Styling with the moto jacket added a touch of edginess  to the otherwise ladylike ensemble.  A moto jacket is such a  diverse piece  because it is timeless  and the ways it can be  styled is numerous.  For instance, it can be paired over a dress  or it can be worn with denim jeans.   To complete my look and provide balance to my outfit in terms of proportion I wore one of fall’s favorite footwear, a pair of ankle boots.

This concludes this blog post.  I hope you all enjoy this post and thank you for reading.

Fall Magic

Hello my dearest lovelies! I pray all is well with everyone.

I recently returned to Minot, North Dakota, after spending almost a month in Trinidad visiting my family and friends. Upon my return it was clear that the enchanting season of Autumn is in full effect as  I was greeted by crisp  cool air and a  landscape ablaze with varying hues of yellow, brown, crimson and rust coloured foliage and falling leaves carpeting the ground.  Consequently, Fall is perhaps the most picturesque season of all. In conjunction with the mesmeric fall colours,   the drop in the temperature,  the availability of seasonal favorites such as warm apple cider and pumpkin spice everything, along with the awareness that we are getting closer to the holidays this season feels absolutely magical.

As for the fashion, the chilly weather makes it imperative to dress in such a way that guarantees being warm and cozy. This is usually achieved by layering pieces of clothing. Therefore, as part of my fall outfit I wore a pair of black tights over thermal pants. In addition to its  functional purpose of ensuring  that I was kept warm , I found that the  aesthetic of the black tights complemented the plaid pattern sheath dress thereby giving my outfit  a vintage classic appearance.  The polished feel of the ensemble was further accentuated by the single swarm applique sewn onto the dress. In fact,  it was this subtle detail  that made me fall in love with the dress because the swarm applique added character and dimension to the attire.

Accessories are the best way to spruce up any outfit. As such, I accessorized by wearing a  dark brown cloche hat with flowers detailing and draped the neckline of my dress with a bold red scarf.  The cloche hat which is reminiscent of women fashion of the 1920’s added a touch of chic sophistication whilst the incorporation of the red scarf further  elevated the poise appearance of the outfit by adding a burst of color.  To complete the look of my outfit, I wore my favorite fall ankle boots.

Accordingly, this concludes this blog post. Thank you for reading.

My Caribbean Inspiration

Hello my dearest lovelies!. I pray that everyone is doing well. My outfit post today will be in honor of my recent visit to my home in the Caribbean island of Trinidad.

Although modern communication technologies such as Skype, Facetime and WhatsApp has significantly bridge the distance gap and makes staying connected easier, for me being physically away from my family and friends  still remains the most challenging  part of my migration to North Dakota. Therefore, I jump at every chance I get to visit my loved ones back  home in Trinidad. Every time I visit it feels like I never left but the awareness that my stay is temporary makes me place a greater degree of appreciation and value for the time I spend with family and friends.

During my most recent visit, Trinidad and Tobago was experiencing a heat wave with temperatures soaring to as high as 35 degrees Celsius. Despite the extremely hot weather  the  tropical landscape  appeared to remain mostly  untouched by the heat and stood resilient in face of the canicular  days  which was made evident by the presence of dense tropical vegetation, gorgeous lush  clusters of bougainvillea and majestic poui trees in full bloom with the most spectacular poui blossoms.

Therefore upon my return to Minot, North Dakota,  the beauty of this tropical landscape inspired me to don a dress  somewhat reflective of a Caribbean vibe. The deep  green leaf print and its shape is a nod to foliage typical to the Caribbean and its light weight material makes it the perfect dress to wear on warm summer days. Although the dress by itself  is a statement piece  it is  versatile in terms of styling whereby it can be layered with a sweater  on the days when the temperature is cooler.

The pearl detailing on the collar of the dress added that  bit of preppy charm to the outfit.  I therefore decided to play on this polished look by cinching my waist with a broad belt for a lady like silhouette. However, since I was in a park at the time I wore this dress  I embraced a practical but on trend foot wear by wearing a pair of nude colour laced up ballet flats. The flat footwear provided a perfect balance to  the polished feel of the outfit  by adding a  casual touch and so making for an ideal daytime look.  Whereas on  those occasions I may want a more refined  sophisticated appearance I can pair my outfit with wedges or heels.

And so this concludes this blog post. I hope you all enjoy this post and thank you for reading.

Lots of love,

Salisha
